About

With a group of adults in French language integration, including many newcomers, artistic educator Julien Sicre organized a brainstorming session to choose themes for representation in an indoor mural at the Gabrielle-Roy Adult Education Center in Saint-Michel. The chosen themes focused on kindness and perseverance. Julien incorporated the idea of hands as a common thread, as they were prominently featured in many of the participants’ drawings.

Expressions like “avoir la main verte” (to have a green thumb), “avoir le cœur sur la main” (to wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve), and “la main qui protège” (the protecting hand), for example, inspired the imagery of the collective artwork.

The students were actively involved throughout the creation process, which took place during quiet moments, allowing them the freedom to paint among friends while listening to their own music. This artistic moment thus became an oasis of tranquility, socialization, and joy for these adults.
