THE TALLEST MURAL IN MONTREAL IS ILLUMINATED
Spectacular Françoise Sullivan Permanent Artistic Projections
MU’s most ambitious multimedia mural project ever, which pays tribute to Françoise Sullivan. MU unveils Danse dans la nuit, a permanent multidisciplinary projection installation that now adorns the largest mural in Montreal, DAMIERS 2023. This marks the second phase of the project, which pays tribute to Françoise Sullivan, an iconic figure in contemporary Quebec and Canadian art, who is now 101 years old.
Danse dans la nuit presents two permanent works designed by motion-design artists Elizabeth Laferrière and Sébastien Samyn. The animation, projected on the central part of the mural, reimagines the iconic improvised dance cycle Danse dans la neige, a landmark work created by Françoise Sullivan in 1948. Performed in February 1948 on Mont Saint-Hilaire, Danse dans la neige is an iconic performance by Françoise Sullivan, regarded as a foundational work of contemporary dance in Canada. Filmed by Jean Paul Riopelle—though the footage was lost in the 1970s—it was immortalized through the iconic photographs of Maurice Perron.
Through motion design and architectural lighting, the animations infuse the mural with an innovative multimedia dimension, combining dance, visual arts, and new technologies. The multimedia works (each five minutes long) will be displayed from dusk until midnight every day, once an hour (on the hour).
