About
This mural celebrates the hundredth anniversary of the mythic building that houses the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (once the Gayety), a building that has always held the theatre as its vocation. Under the direction of Lorraine Pintal and Elizabeth-Ann Doyle, the mural was conceived by Thomas Csano and produced by an experienced team led by the mural artist Florence April-Borgeat. The work celebrates the building as a temple of culture at the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles, and the theatre as an art highlighting the history of our society. Delving into history, the lexicon and the grand moments of the theatre, the mural brings forward the names, dates and words through various typographies expressing the creative power of this art form and is crowned with a citation from Shakespeare: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players”.
The 255 square meter mural overlooking the new Hydro-Quebec Park was produced in seven weeks and falls within the Parcours Lumière of the Quartier des spectacles Partnership. In fact, it is the first typographical and illuminated mural in Montreal. A light projection conceived by Claude Accolas was integrated into the work allowing it to be transformed at nightfall. This allows passerby a progressive experience and with time discovers new words and new colours that infuse new life into the mural!
